Aparecium*

This post is dedicated to my friends in the planner community.

Although it is not entirely mental health- and addiction recovery-related, as I mentioned before, creativity and the pursuit of healthy hobbies are great ways to foster mental health. ;) }

Here is a peek at my planner set-up for October.

Mental Health: Plan on It!

The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule,
but to schedule your priorities. - Stephen R. Covey

-----------

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. - Pablo Picasso

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I'm depressed, I lose a sense of time and priorities. Everything in life is awash in grey. I get nothing done and as the days drip by, I become increasingly aware of a monster growing in the periphery: anxiety. All the appointments, tasks, projects, and people that have been neglected, await me at the entrance of my cave.

...happier days
I'm sitting here now, staring out - afraid to move forward, but knowing that if I don't do at least something, the monster will grow larger and larger.

So, how do I get myself up and out when I feel so overwhelmed? How do I gain some control and get moving again back on my path?

Among the many self-care tactics which I've written about before, there's one other tool in my kit: my personal planner.

A personal planner keeps track of appointments, tasks, and contacts, yes; but it can also do so much more! {Those of you in the "planner community" (and yes, there is a planner community) know what I'm talking about!} A planner can be your road map and guide, as well as your creative outlet, mental health manager, and curator of your dreams!

I think I'll be digging mine out now to help me get rolling again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About My Personal Planner

There are an infinite number of ways to set one up. Mine typically features these familiar sections:
  • Calendar
  • To Do
  • Notes
  • General info and key contacts

In addition, I've added "Focus" and "Goals" sections which contain:

  • Inspiration: gratitude list, list of my accomplishments, life's highlights and lessons, quotes, affirmations, visualizations, etc.
  • Lists: various lists and key information from diverse areas of my life, in alphabetical order.
  • Other sections dedicated to life areas for which I have a lot of info to track: my job, college, college club, etc.
Aside from its functional, organizational, and motivational elements, my planner has also become a creative outlet.

Personal planner decorating has actually become quite popular. A quick Google search will yield post after post and video after video of planner set-up ideas and decorating tips.

When I was in PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) a few years back, one of the therapeutic activities our group did involved art. To help us relax, and express our emotions using our visual cortices, we drew, made collages, and yes, even colored. Decorating my planner has the same effect on me. It's a soothing, serotonin-raising hobby!

Some of my tools include:

a pretty planner,

sticky notes and stickers,

...the beaver's face cracks me up every time!

decorative clips,

washi tape,

colored pens,

decorative tab dividers
with a great inspirational quote,

and finally, planner charms {see pics above and below}.

I've included just a few of the resources out there to get you started. Happy planning!

Special thanks to all my friends in the US, the UK, and Australia who gifted me most of these planners and supplies! I appreciate your kindness and friendship, and I promise to pay it forward when I can!

Planning My Way Back

Getting a late start today. Didn't sleep well last night. I am feeling better physically, just really, really tired.

Having been sick these past few days, I have gotten behind in so much and I'm feeling overwhelmed. I have so much school work and house work to do that I don't know where to begin.

I think maybe the first place to start is my planner. Getting it onto paper and starting with the first thing on the list.

Yeah, that's it. I may not be able to do it all today, but I can do a lot if I just get started.

Alright. Thank you listening to me as I think this out.

Wishing you a happy, well-planned and well-lived day!

Struggling to write again - this time not because I'm depressed. In fact, it is because I have been keeping myself busy and on track with getting ready to head back to school next week. Blogging Again!

Dear reader,

I'm sorry I have been offline for almost a month. I didn't intend to abandon you. As you may recall from my last post, I suffered a bad spell of depression. Fortunately, my doctor was able to tweak my medications, and I eventually got back on track. Having gotten so far behind in school, however, made the end of semester ridiculously busy!

Well, semester's over and meds are working, so...I'm back and ready to blog!

A couple of things coming up that I want to share with you:
  • Months ago, I started the The 7 Habits - an overview for those recovering from mental illness. I got as far as the introduction, but never went further. I intend to pick up that series next week.
  • January 9 will mark the 1 year anniversary of this blog! In celebration of the event, I am going to run another contest* - details to follow soon. Here is a sneak peak at some of the prizes:
A pair of Converse Chuck Taylor's Classic  - your choice of color!
    Retail value: $55.00

My Cross-Addiction

Hey! Don't forget to enter the Pink Hi-Top Adventures giveaway! See: http://pink-hi-top-adventures.blogspot.com/2013/09/100th-post-contest.html

And now, back to our regularly scheduled blog...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Filofax, A5 Finchley in Imperial Purple
Haven't blogged in a week(?) or so. I have been trying to get myself caught back up in school after having gotten a little behind. I have also struggled with writer's block again - waiting to write the perfect blog. After all, this is my 100th post. It's gotta be good, doesn't it? Oh well. It is what it is. I'll just write about what's on my mind now.

You know what's on my mind? Cross-addiction: giving up one addiction and replacing it with another. I am cross-addicted to a Facebook group - Planner Addicts. Yes, the name says it all. It's a wonderful group full of like-minded women and a few men, who love organization, office supplies, planners, and planning. I realize this jettisons me into the realm of super- geekdom, but I love this group! And, being a good addict always out for a quick "fix" - anything to stuff that hole of never-ending want - Facebook is currently filling that void.

The irony is that the group is dedicated to planners and organizing one's time. I clearly need help with the latter. I have a planner and I plan my day, but I struggle with following through on the plan!

{Lord, this blog  is SO boring! If anyone has stuck with me this far, God bless you!}

So today's goal is to use my planner - to plan my day {yes, at 12:50 PM!} and follow the plan - and to better manage my time on Facebook.

That said, gotta get to work! Hope you have a productive, happy day too!
